SHARE Housing for Older Adults

SHARE stands for Shared Housing and Resource Exchange.  It is a new program for Venango County to match potential Home Seekers with Home Hosts.  The program is a non-medical model attempting to bridge the gap in the housing issues for Venango County and to assist someone with “aging in place” while they remain in their home as long as possible.

Who can take part in SHARE?

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply.  When a match is made, one of the two participants does have to be over 60 years of age.  The Host Home has to provide a private bedroom for both participants and a decision will be made on the arrangements of the shared living space in the rest of the home.

How does the program work?

The Housing Counselor will meet with Home Hosts and Home Seekers individually to complete a multi-page application that will then be entered into a database to create matches.  These matches will meet face to face prior to deciding whether they want to continue.  After a Home Host and Home Seeker have decided they want a trial period, background checks will be completed at a state and national level.  After a successful trial period, agreements are then signed by both parties outlining the shared areas of the home and the services/resources each is going to provide for the other.

Benefits for the participants?

These matches can be a financial benefit, a resourceful benefit or a combination of the two for both participants. The Home Seeker can be charged a maximum of 30% of their gross income to reside in a Host’s Home.  This can benefit someone greatly by reducing their monthly cost burden to live on their own.   This can also provide the Home Host with extra funding for expenses on their home such as monthly utilities or yearly taxes.

Who to contact for information?

Anyone interested in the program can contact Venango County Older Adult Services by calling 814-432-9711 and speak to Housing Coordinator Jeremy Tidd or attend one of the numerous presentations being put on at all of the county Senior Centers.
